Electric Log Splitter
Electric log splitters employ an electric motor to power the hydraulic pump and are technically the simplest form on the market today.
- Generally less bulky and easier to handle and set up – – free from the hassle of filing with gas, petrol or diesel – – less noisy and require very little maintenance
- Requires electric power source nearby limiting where it can be used – – generally run off household supply so limited power output – – health and safety considerations if used outside – – dangerous to use in damp or wet environment
Could an electric log splitter be the best splitter for you?
- If portability is less of a consideration then an electric wood splitter could be the best type of log splitter for you. If you have a covered environment with an electrical supply, maybe a large garage or outbuilding, then this may be another reason to choose an electric splitter. They are certainly quieter than a gas powered splitter and they are not so smelly from exhaust gases making them ideal if you want to use a wood splitter inside or under cover.
In summary, electric log splitters are generally a good choice for domestic use especially so if you have space undercover in which to work.
Gas Log Splitter
Gas log splitters employ a gasoline or petrol powered motor to power the hydraulic pump and they are sometimes referred to as hydraulic splitters or as a hydraulic log splitter or hydralic wood splitter. They work in much the same way as an electric log splitter.
- operates independently from the power source and so can be used remotely and moved to different locations
- generally generate more horse power and force
- can often employ 4 or 6 way wedges for greater splitting capacity
- with care can be used in damp weather
- need to carry fuel re-fill the gas tank
- less environmentally friendly – can be noisy and emits exhaust fumes from the burnt fuel
Could a Gas Log Splitter be for you?
The main difference from electric powered versions is a gas log splitter is generally more powerful and so is the automatic choice for professional and commercial work. If you are a professional tradesman then a gas or hydraulic log splitter is usually your choice.
Another factor is portability, a gas log splitter can be moved to where the logs are to be split. Most log splitters come fitted with wheels for ease of movement but gas log splitters can often be towed behind a pick-up truck making moving over greater distances possible. If portability is you main concern then a gas or hydraulic wood splitter will almost certainly be your choice.
Do not discard a gas log splitter for domestic use, you may not have access to a handy electric power source and so gas powered splitters at the low end of the power range can be an ideal choice.
Tractor Log Splitter
A Tractor Log Splitter, as the name implies, is powered by a tractor.
- Can be used remotely and often towed behind the tractor to site
- Very powerful and able to handle the biggest of logs
- Running costs can be quite low depending upon the cost of fuel to run the tractor
- Work efficiently and can saves hours of work in a commercial environment
- Relies on a tractor for its power/you need to own a tractor
- upfront cost is high.
Could a Tractor Log Splitter be for you?
If you own a tractor and you run farm or a commercial or industrial log splitting operation then this type of log splitter may well be ideally suited for your needs. It connects to the tractor’s hydraulic system, powering a cylinder that presses a wedge into the wood. Tractor log splitters are extremely powerful, durable and robust. Tractor mounted log splitters can generate colossal splitting forces of up to 20 tonnes or more. If you have a professional or industrial log splitting business than the best log splitter for you may well be the tractor powered type.

Powerhouse Log Splitter Reviews
There was not much information about the Powerhouse XM-380 to be found on the internet. Those reviews that we did find were of mixed report. While there were several people who stated that they were very pleased with the product and would recommend it to their friends, there were also those who were unsatisfied as well.
Positive reviews included those who mentioned that they were able to split unseasoned pine, birch, cherry, red oak and ash with no problems at all. One reviewer stated that as long as you split with the grain of the log there should never be an issue. Another said that it was very easy to use and put together. Another stated that it was more than adequate for most logs you can lift. One of the most positive aspects of using this splitter is that it does not require costly gasoline and is more quiet than one with a gas engine.
Negative reviews that we found mentioned several people getting a product that was damaged straight out of the box with no help getting parts or repair, the power cord being too short and instability, causing it to fall over.
That being said, we feel that if you have an even piece of property and do not need many thick logs cut the Powerhouse XM-380 7-Ton Electric Hydraulic Log Splitter may be the one for you. However, if you have more extensive log cutting needs, you may wish to opt for a more powerful model.

Wood Log Splitter Safety
Like with any heavy machinery safety should always be a serious consideration when operating a wood log splitter and you should always take certain precautions to help make operating a wood splitter as safe as possible. The following precautions should be adopted as the minimum,
- Only adults familiar with the operation of the individual wood splitter should use it
- A safety zone should be set up around the splitter as splinters from the splitting wood can fly off
- No one, apart from the operator, should be inside the safety zone whilst the machine is in operation
- Goggles should be worn to protect the eyes, safety gloves should be worn to protect the hands and adequate clothing should cover the body taking care that no clothing can be caught up in the operation.
The blade which splits the wood has a huge force exerted upon it by the machine and anything caught between the actual log and this blade will receive the full force of it…enough to cause serious injury, you could loose fingers or a hand. The best log splitters all have a “two handed” safety mechanism built into the actual operation process. It means that the operator must use both of his hands to operate two levers to start the wood splitter in motion thus keeping both hands out of harms way from the forced blade.
How to decide which log splitter you need?
Deciding which log splitter to buy might seem daunting at first but if you adopt some simple guidelines the task becomes relatively easy. Take your time to make your decision.
First you need to decide what you will be using it for. Are you buying the best log splitter for one of the following situations –
- Domestic use
- Semi-professional use
- Professional use
To help compare the many different types on the market you will need to think about where you will be using the best log splitter and the safety aspects. Will you be using it outside or inside, maybe in a barn or outside building? If you are able to use it inside do you have access to electrical power? If you are using the machine outside will you be using it in a damp environment? Is space a limiting factor?
The three main types of log splitter to consider are –
- Electric Log Splitter
- Gas Log Splitter
- Tractor Log Splitter
Should I choose a Vertical or Horizontal One?
If space is tight then maybe a vertical log splitter would be preferable to a horizontal one.
When you look at the space you have available consideration should be given to the splitting direction of the action of it. There are two basic types –
- Horizontal Log Splitter – Individual Logs are loaded onto the splitter and automatically placed in front of the cutting wedge. The splitting mechanism works in a horizontal motion driving the wedge into the log and the cut pieces drop to the floor either side of the splitter
- Upright or vertical Log Splitter – Individual logs are placed on the footplate immediately below the cutting wedge. The splitting mechanism travels in a downward motion driving into the log and the cut pieces fall away to either side.
If space is at a premium you may choose a vertical model which has the advantage of less heavy lifting but on the other hand more precise cutting of the logs will be required to enable the logs to stand up squarely.
Some of the best log splitter models provide both horizontal and vertical operation. Switching between the two is just a matter of the splitter rotating from a horizontal to a vertical plane.
What type of wedge?
Generally the best log splitters for home use come equipped with a basic 2 way wedge with an optional accessory of a four way wedge. Most semi-professional wood splitters are fitted with 4-way wedges as standard and generally 6 way wedges are fitted on high-end log splitters for use in commercial operations. The type of blade fitted affects the speed at which you can cut your logs down into firewood and so the decision depends largely upon the volume of logs to be processed.
What force do I need?
The main part of the log splitting operation is the ram which drives the wedge. The force behind the ram is measured in tons and can be anything from 3 to 30 tons or more. Generally the higher the force the more commercial the log splitter becomes. Most domestic splitters for logs fall into the “up to 10 ton” catagory. Closely associated with the force is the diameter and length of logs that can be safely split. The best domestic log splitter should allow for logs up to 10 inches in diameter and up to around 18 inches in length.
Is Portability of the log splitter an issue?
If you are only going to use your splitter for wood in a fixed place then portability may be less of an issue but today being able to split logs around the home grounds or in woods is normal. Most log and wood splitters come with wheels so portability becomes less of an issue. If you will be moving your log splitter often then you should consider the overall weight and how easy it is to pull around, maybe you might need two people. If you will be transporting your log splitter longer distances then you will almost certainly want one that can be towed behind a truck. You will also need to check if your towable log splitter is for off road use only or is it equipped for towing on the highway.
Whatever type you end up buying you will want to be sure you’ve bought the best log splitter to meet your own demand and circumstances.
