Most people don’t even think about how easy it is for most locks to be broken or picked. That’s why you need the best bike chain lock that will keep your bicycle secure and actually do its job!
U-locks and chain locks and are undoubtedly the best way to protect your bike. And ideally you would use one of each. But if you’re only going to buy one lock, which is the best, a chain or a U-lock?
A conscientious cyclist doesn’t secure their prized wheels with something that a thief could get through in seconds using a pair of nail clippers. On the other hand, what’s the point in investing in a lightweight, carbon fiber racing frame if you have to carry a 10kg chainlock around your waist all day?

Master Lock 8147D 4-Digit Barrel Combination Bike Lock
If you are just after a light deterrent, this combination chain lock is a good choice on a super budget. The stationary chain lock has plenty of length to secure your bicycle and the combination mechanism means you don’t need to carry keys around with you.
That said, the lock itself is a bit flimsy and, again, is for light security at best.
Kryptonite 720018210610 KryptoFlex
This seven foot cable is made of braided steel to give it greater cut resistance than twisted cables. That said, cables tend to be easy enough to cut through that they should not be your sole locking advice.
This item works best with used in conjunction with a U-lock or something similar. It has a thick vinyl coating to avoid scratching your bicycle.
Master Lock 78DPF Looped Cable
This thick, six foot cable works great with a master lock or U-lock to secure your bike and bike wheels. It has a durable, plastic coating that’s gentle to the finish of your bicycle and won’t scratch it.
It will deter anyone walking past who doesn’t have some strong kitchen shears on them. The cable itself is high quality and will last you for decades.
Kryptonite Keeper Integrated Chain Bicycle Lock
The Kryptonite Keeper has a hardened deadbolt which provides extra holding power against attacks. Its disc-style cylinder is pick and drill resistant. The kryptonite chain lock is long enough to wrap around the frame, rear wheel, and a bike rack pipe.
For deterring the average criminal, it works well for a few hours. However, you might want to find something stronger if you plan on leaving an expensive bike out overnight.
Etronic Security Lock M4 Self Coiling Cable Lock
The Etronic Security Lock cable has a combination lock which means you don’t need to carry keys around with you.
It has a solid, sturdy build and the shield around the cable protects your bike and stops the cable from rusting. It’s super easy to transport and doesn’t get in the way. This would be a good choice if you require light security.
Kryptonite Kryptolok Series 2 Standard Bicycle U-Lock
This U-lock is light despite its size and is made with 13mm hardened performance steel shackle and a “bent foot” design for serious protection.
Reviews on how well it works is mixed, with a few customers claiming theirs was defeated with bolt cutters and another saying it took a locksmith an hour of sawing with an electric saw after the customer lost their keys. For the most part though, it is a great lock for the right situation.
Kryptonite Evolution 4 Integrated Chain Bicycle Lock
This bicycle lock features a new patent-pending pin-less link which secures the chain to a hardened deadbolt, offering no weak link in the chain. It would take an angle grinder or a large pair of bolt cutters to defeat it.
The weather-resistant nylon sleeves prevent your bike from getting scratched and the compact coiling makes it super easy and lightweight to carry when riding. It’s like having the versatility of a cable lock and the security of a U-Lock. The lock mechanism does require a little practice to get use to though and it’s important not to force the key.
Kryptonite New York Chain w/Evolution Series 4 Disc Lock
It would take a thief some intense planning and time to break through this lock. The six-sided chain links are made of hardened manganese steel and are super tough.
They are surrounded by a protective nylon cover to prevent your bike from getting scratched. Take note that this chain is massive and heavy! As annoying as that may seem, it may be completely worth it to keep your bicycle safe.
Etronic Security Lock M6 Self Coiling Resettable Combination Cable Lock
Unlike other combination bike locks, this one has an easy set and reset feature which allows you to set your own combinations. Having no need for keys is handy and the cable is light and easy to use and transport.

This is the ultimate and the best bike lock for high theft areas. It’s oversized design features double deadbolt locking and its maximum performance steel shackle resists bolt cutters and leverage attacks.
It comes with three keys including one with a light so that you can see what you’re doing at night. Use by itself or in conjunction with a cable. The only trade-off with this lock is its heavy weight.
When choosing your lock, consider which areas you typically keep your bike in and for how long. The strength of the lock and cable as well as its weight are other factors to keep in mind. Our list should help you decide on the best bike lock for you.
